AmeriCorps Build-a-Thon

Habitat for Humanity of Seattle-King County (Habitat SKC) has been selected as one of five national sites for the 2013 Habitat for Humanity International AmeriCorps Build-A-Thon! The Build-a-Thon (BAT) is a weeklong signature event of the Habitat AmeriCorps service year. Nationwide the event will engage more than 400 AmeriCorps members and alumni from 37 states. The BAT will bring together AmeriCorps members and alumni for intensive construction to meet local community needs for affordable housing, while celebrating AmeriCorps members’ service together with Habitat.

Habitat for Humanity SKC will partner with Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat as a site, along with two King county sites for the event. Sites will host between 10-36 members each. 27 other AmeriCorps members already serving at these two Habitat affiliates will bring the total AmeriCorps participants to about 120.

The members will arrive on Sunday May 19th and be welcomed with an opening ceremony featuring representatives from Habitat SKC, Habitat for

Humanity International, Habitat AmeriCorps Alum and homeowners. Activities during the build week will include traditional blitz build activities on the three sites and a coming-together of all 120 members to join local White Center groups and businesses for a community clean-up day on Friday May 24th.

Directly following the clean-up day in White Center will be a closing ceremony and barbecue lunch to close out the week. The closing ceremony will feature speakers from the White Center Community Development Association, the Washington Commission for National and Community Service, Habitat for Humanity International, as well as Clive Rainey, Habitat for Humanity’s first volunteer.
