FAQ
Who are we and what do we do?
Habitat for Humanity Seattle-King County is a community based low-income housing developer. We build, renovate, and repair houses affordably, primarily using volunteer labor, and selling them at cost, with no profit and no interest to working families in King County.
What is our connection to Habitat for Humanity International?
We are an independently-funded affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI). HFHI is a non-profit that seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. Donations given to HFHI fund housing abroad whereas donations given to local affiliates fund housing in the particular community the affiliate is located in.
How does Habitat for Humanity work?
Through volunteer labor and donation of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowner (partner) families. Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit, financed with affordable, no-interest loans. The homeowners’ monthly mortgage payments are used to build still more Habitat houses. Habitat is not a giveaway program. In addition to the monthly mortgage payments, homeowners invest hundreds of hours of their own labor –sweat equity—into building their Habitat house and the houses of others. Qualifying families purchase their home at cost. They must take an interest-free mortgage which they pay back over 20-30 years.
How do we build our homes?
We build by actively involving the community throughout the process. By using environmentally-responsible methods and sustainable designs. By making sure that our work doesn’t take place in isolation. And by providing a diversified array of products and services tailored to best suit each neighborhood’s needs.
Does Habitat for Humanity provide home repair?
Yes, in addition to building homes, Habitat for Humanity is working in select neighborhoods to provide critical home repair to low-income homeowners struggling to maintain their homes. For information, please contact (206)292-5240.
How are families selected?
Families come from a variety of backgrounds and are selected through an extensive screening process including income eligibility and being willing to partner through sweat equity, working on their homes and the homes of their neighbors.
